Computers and Networking

• Setup and repair of University-owned equipment such as laptops, desktop computers, printers, projectors, and other peripherals used for teaching, research and department business. 

• Offer hardware and software service and support. (Computer Software provided by the Department of Chemistry Microlab)

• Setup and troubleshooting of wired network connections faculty, staff, and students located in Smith Hall and Kolthoff Hall

• Offer advice on and procurement of computers, printers, and variety of electronic peripherals.

Electronics

• Sale of a variety of electronic parts and components.

• Provide service on electronic instruments used in research and teaching.

• We offer a limited amount of design and construction of one-of-a-kind electronic devices for use in research and teaching.

Acceptable Use Policy

• All faculty, staff, students, and visitors are asked to read and abide by the Acceptable Use of Information Technology when using their computer systems on campus.

File Storage Options for Departmental Staff, Faculty and Researchers

Academic Data Storage (ADS) access

• The U of MN offers instructions on how to connect to network drives

  • note that Windows uses back slashes: \\ad.umn.edu\umn\CHEM\Administrative\chem_administrative

  • note that Macs use forward slashes: //ad.umn.edu/umn/CHEM/Administrative/chem_administrative

ADS replaces \\files.umn.edu\CHEM and is designed for daily miscellaneous file use by a department's personnel.  The files stored here are triple replicated across three servers in different geographic locations every hour. It is designed to endure a natural disaster of moderate proportions. It has, like Time Machine on the Mac, the ability to restore versions of your files for up to 30 days. Do not store research data here.   If you are collaborating with people outside the U of MN community Google Shared Drives is an excellent complimentary service that offers up to 100GB of free space.

RDS replaces \\files.umn.edu\CSE-nr-ns\Chem\CHEM backups and is designed for daily research file use by a department's researchers.  The files stored here are triple replicated across three servers in different geographic locations every hour. It is designed to endure a natural disaster of moderate proportions. It has, like Time Machine on the Mac, the ability to restore versions of your files for up to 30 days. Store research data here!  RDS offers up to 20TB of free space before there is a charged for its use.  If you are collaborating with people outside the U of MN community Google Shared Drives is an excellent complimentary service  that offers up to 100GB of free space.

Each research group should have a Group Computer Liaison that works with the E-Shop to support computer security, software, and logons.  Your Group Computer Liaison should contact the E-Shop (Google Chat or chemtech@umn.edu) to request the addition or removal of people from your groups computer logons and RDS folders.
