Cecily, Mathematician

About Me

Hi! I'm Cecily Santiago, a third year PhD student in the mathematics department at the University of Minnesota. I graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 2017 with a BA in mathematics and a minor in computer science. I'm working with Peter Webb, studying representation theory, and in particular, representation stability

I'm passionate about teaching and outreach. Generally, I want to make the world a better place for everyone, and as a mathematician, I can do that by sharing my love for math. I work hard to show my students that they can master the course material, and I find ways to spread math into the broader community. I want mathematics to be a welcoming, accessible world, especially to under-resourced and underrepresented students, and anyone who ever thought they couldn't understand, enjoy, or excel at math.

In my free time, I hang out with my cat, my boyfriend, and many of my wonderful friends from the math department (Flora, Nick, and too many to list, respectively), grow houseplants semi-hydroponically, play Forge of Empires, and generally ignore my chores. I enjoy theatre, good food ranging from state fair fare to fine dining, and a variety of podcasts. If you share any of these hobbies, drop me a line! I'd love to be friends.

Current Activities

This summer (2020), I am co-organizing the Summer Student Representation Theory Seminar with Claire Frechette. More info can be found here
