Precision Health Science Education:

Expanding Opportunities for Adaptive, Individualized  Approaches to Learning

Health science education has undergone rapid transformation during the last several years. Educators are cognizant of the unique needs of individual students and in an effort to respond appropriately are developing approaches to leverage precision education in our practices.

Precision education is a system transforming lifelong learning by using data and technology to personalize education, increase efficiency, and improve patient outcomes. This conference will offer a showcase of best practices across the health science disciplines. Workshops and presentations should address curricular development, assessment of outcomes, innovative teaching practices and models for supporting students.

Here are some of the questions that may be addressed at Best Practices in Health Science Education (BPHSE) in October 2023:

Proposals

Session topics do not need to specifically address precision education–we are looking to offer a program that offers highly-engaging workshops and presentations showcasing best practices within the health science disciplines. Sessions may be offered in-person OR in the virtual space. Please indicate the preferred format in your application

Theme

You will also be asked to which themes your session most closely aligns from the following:

Format

Virtual Posters [virtual only]

A graphic presentation of an author's research or best practices (i.e.,  learning activities and current practices that are not necessarily under the umbrella of research). Authors illustrate their findings by highlighting their main findings, displaying graphs, photos, diagrams, and a small amount of text on the poster boards. Posters will be prepared and shared online on FlipGrid.

Lightning Rounds [in-person only]

Lightning presentations are engaging presentations of 5-7 minutes. One suggested format is the high-energy Pecha Kucha presentations of 20 slides that auto-advance every 20 seconds (6 minutes and 40 sec). See the Pecha Kucha Resource page for more info. The Pecha Kucha format is recommended but not required.

Panel Discussion (75 minutes) [Virtual or in-person]

A moderated session consisting of three to five panelists discussing a specific topic or challenge in a conversational format.

Workshop (75 minutes) [virtual or in-person]

Workshops should provide participants an introductory perspective or overview of a specific topic or concept, incorporating different types of activities, such as, for example, games, brainstorming sessions, or opportunities for networking.

Half-Day Workshop (150 minutes) [virtual or in-person]

In-depth workshops or instructional programs with hands-on learning opportunities and specific takeaways that enable participants to gain more expertise in a particular area of interest, or interactive exercises designed to address a challenge. Sessions should have half or more of the time spent on experiential learning and active audience participation focused on the development of new skills, techniques, or proficiencies.

Facilitated Table Topic Gathering (45 minutes) [virtual or in-person]

Each facilitated discussion will be led by a moderator focused on a set of questions that would be of interest to a group of health science educators. A proposal for a facilitated table topic should include the intended audience, topic and discussion prompts.
