Academic Pathways

FLASH CONFERENCE

JANUARY 22 & 29, 2021

12-2PM PST | 3-5PM EST

Research on Academic Pathways (RAP) is a network of scientists who aim to better understand: i) how students interact with curricular opportunities in ways that further their learning and careers, and; ii) how universities can utilize such knowledge to improve educational effectiveness.

Rationale

A growing number of researchers are seeking to understand academic pathways as sequence and network phenomena. By academic pathways, we refer to the iterative and cumulative character of learning (the acquisition of knowledge and skill) and academic progress (forward movement through academic programs). Because this work is diverse in method, epistemology, and institutional home, it has been difficult to organize appropriate peer review and accrete cumulative scientific insight among scholars of academic pathways. This flash conference is one effort to build shared scientific language and community while retaining the intellectual and methodological diversity that a comprehensive science of academic pathways requires.

Two-day flash conference

We are hosting a two-day flash conference with the goal of providing visibility for as much empirical work as possible in a limited time. Presenters should think of this as a “show-and-tell,” offering thumbnail sketches of each project’s general motivation, methods, data, and research findings (however preliminary).

For simplicity, presentations are grouped by campus. Discussions of common themes and practical challenges in pathways research across campuses are encouraged during Q/A and post-session coffee/happy hour hangouts. Presentations will be recorded for those who aren't able to attend the synchronous sessions.

The organizers will be ruthless time-keepers so that sessions begin and end on schedule.

We approach the convening in a spirit of pleasure, anticipation, and excitement. Lets have fun!
