The Mind in Society Lab at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time research assistant and lab manager to begin in Summer 2021. We study racial inequality at the intersection of individuals and institutions, using methods ranging from online experiments, to field studies in community settings, to computational social science. Our current projects use officer body cameras to examine disparities in policing, google streetview images to test perceptual biases in physical space, and behavioral experiments to uncover the consequences of outgroup deindividuation.
The successful candidate will be reliable, detail-oriented, and collaborative. They will also show interest in independently picking up new skills and problem solving. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, beginning March 2021. The anticipated starting date for the position is August 2021. The annual salary range for this position is $30,000-$34,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
Required Qualifications
• High school diploma or Associate's degree
• At least 1 year of research experience
• Excellent organizational, problem-solving, writing, and computing skills
• Cultural competence and excellent interpersonal skills
• Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
• Attentive to details and able to manage simultaneous projects
• Experience working in a lab or field setting with participants
• Experience coding, processing, and managing data using excel and/or R
Desired Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, sociology, computer science, or a related field
• 2+ years of relevant research experience in psychology or computational social science
• Experience overseeing a research study
• Experience with data analysis in R
• Experience with programming in R, Python, and/or Javascript
• Familiarity with Qualtrics
• Research interests in racial inequality, computational social science, or criminal justice
The Research Associate will play a central role in the functioning of the lab, from study design, administration, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
Research Tasks (80% time):
Assisting the design of online, field, and lab experiments and contributing to data collection
Sampling naturalistic data (web scraping, body camera recordings, street view images)
Supporting community partnerships for developing and disseminating research
Contributing to data analysis and manuscript preparation
Independent projects will be considered and supported by the PI
Administrative Tasks (20% time):
Acting as point of contact between undergraduate research assistants and PI
Supporting grant applications for lab research
Maintaining lab web site and social media accounts
Coordinating purchases and reimbursements with administrative staff
Assisting with IRB preparation
