my name is nickolas holcomb, a junior at the university of michigan double majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology and the environment with a minor in writing. its a mouthful, i know. thats why i tell people i want to be a journalist.
i was born in nashville, tennessee, but i moved to murray, kentucky when i was nine. after going to elementary, middle and high school in kentucky, i headed north to attend the university of michigan, ann arbor.
at michigan, my eyes opened up to the diverse world around me. while extremely grateful for growing up in murray, my home community felt as if i were in a bubble of culture, ideology and perspective - moving to michigan popped this bubble.
i always loved the arts, but growing up in a place two hours from a big city, it was inaccessible. it was hard to learn about diverse scenes and new perspectives from such a distance. ann arbor and detroit opened the door for me to explore ideas from all sorts of places.
now, i strive to explore these scenes for the people like me. there are so many different perspectives and outlooks on life across the world, and i strive to illuminate these perspectives through the coverage of art and culture - for the people still stuck in the bubble like i was.
i hope my work or something you see here pops that bubble for you - whether through music, stories or photos - opening ears and fostering understanding among people, because at the end of the day, there is one thing bringing everyone together - we're all human.
