Lean HE is an international community of practice composed of lean and related improvement practitioners in Higher Education. 


In collaboration with our colleagues from the Europe and Asia Pacific divisions, Lean HE Americas is hosting Lean HE Encore, a 3.5-hour virtual mini-conference designed to showcase past presentations from the Lean in Higher Education International Conference held in October 2023.


Registration is free and open for anyone to attend. Please share with other interested colleagues!

Come learn how the University of North Alabama used a form of mapping called Rapid Improvement to change the recruiting culture and grow enrollment.

This presentation explores the integration of Lean Principles and Change Management methods within projects, showcasing the potential to leverage their combined benefits for successful project outcomes while mitigating resistance to change. Drawing from UT Arlington's 5-year journey of growth and blending Lean and change management practices, this session shares valuable lessons learned and provides practical tips for integrating these methodologies within projects. Attendees will begin building a sponsor change plan and engage in discussions regarding the blending of these methods.

Nothing is more valuable than going to "Gemba" (the real place) to observe a process. Operational Strategic Initiatives (OSI) at UC San Diego found itself in a position where Gemba-level insight needed to be captured quickly and in a scalable way to improve it's processes in an Enterprise Cloud-Based Systems. Join OSI's Practice Director of Continuous Improvement in a presentation on the trends of automated process mining and how to efficiently capture process time (touch time) data without losing what makes it "real."

Speaker Bios

Janyce Fadden

Janyce Fadden is Director of Strategic Engagement at the UNA Sanders College of Business & Technology, which hosts the Agile Strategy Lab. She is co-author of Strategic Doing: 10 Skills for Agile Leadership. Her role includes implementing an innovation pipeline strategy called Shoals Shift, an award-winning project, which received a significant Appalachian Regional Commission Grant and named outstanding by the University Economic Development Association and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. In addition, using lean management techniques Fadden has been a key contributor with the Sanders College of Business and Technology’s graduate recruitment team whose work has resulted in doubling the MBA enrollment thus becoming Alabama's largest program and increasing the university's admission, growing enrollment for 15 semesters running. She teaches Strategic Doing and facilities workshops focused on workforce development, economic development, higher education, entrepreneurship, community development, rural economies, manufacturing, and nonprofits. 


Julie Taylor

Julie Taylor is the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management with sixteen years of experience working along the Admissions team at UNA. She is a two-time graduate of UNA with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and a master’s degree in Business Administration. For the past sixteen years, she has had the privilege of guiding students in their college search processes and is thrilled to be a team player in helping set record enrollment for the past 15 consecutive semesters, in part due to lean thinking. 


Candice Beckman

Candice Beckman is a Lean facilitator at the University of Texas at Arlington, bringing 15 years of experience in higher education to her role. With an understanding of academic institutions, Candice specializes in guiding individuals and teams through the problem-solving journey and supporting the successful implementation of changes. 


Tabitha Wiles 

Tabitha Wiles serves as a Business Process Consultant and Change Management Practitioner at the University of Texas at Arlington. Her background includes personal and professional process improvement through coaching and development plans, training facilitation and development, and operations and change management. During her experience, Tabitha has supported, coached, and collaborated with individuals and groups around the globe to promote and support positive change. 


Brad Sollenberger 

Brad Sollenberger is a Master Lean Six Sigma Black Belt that loves talking shop on all things Lean and hearing how it can change peoples lives for the better.


Linda Spinks

Linda has worked at the University of Cambridge since 2004 both as a Business Analyst and more recently as Process Improvement Lead on the our cambridge programme. She is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, an LCS accredited trainer, and has been delivering training in process improvement to staff across the collegiate University since 2017. In addition to this, she has worked with many teams to help them improve their processes.  She is an active member of the LeanHE Global community, as a member of the North and Midlands and European steering groups and by presenting at conferences. In 2018 she contributed a chapter to the Book "Global Lean for Higher Education - A Themed Anthology of Case Studies, Approaches, and Tools" (Yorkstone), and has more recently provided a chapter to the upcoming publication Hoshin Kanri in Higher Education.
