ITiMS
Integrated Training in Microbial Systems
Modeling, Population and Experimental Approaches
For 10 years, beginning in 2015 the Integrated Training in Microbial Systems (ITiMS) program offered mentorship and financial support to University of Michigan doctoral students exploring the burgeoning field of microbiome studies. Supported by the PUP program by the Burroughs Wellcome Fund a total of XX students participated in the program as fellows or associates.
ITiMS goal was to train future scientists who would design and implement novel prevention, diagnostic, and treatment strategies stemming from a deep understanding of the impact of microbial communities on human and environmental health.
The program’s interdisciplinary workshops, trainings, and events were open to all master's and doctoral students. Doctoral students were eligible to apply for an ITiMS traineeship (tuition and stipend). ITiMS also hosted a small grants program (up to $10,000) to support interdisciplinary research, travel or training opportunities.
Our graduates conducted exciting, cross disciplinary research during their training, (see integrative research for examples), and have continued to make important contributions as they have embarked on their professional careers.
