The COVID-19 pandemic left us with idle time spent at home along with extreme isolation from one another. This isolation sent many people to social media in search of answers about COVID-19; however, the lack of knowledge from medical professionals and scientists about this new virus left social media open to perpetuation of health misinformation. The accuracy of health information online varied, thus leading to confusion, false claims and misconceptions.
The aim of this study is to understand how people utilized health information specific to COVID-19 found on social media including sites such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Reddit and YouTube.
This survey is an anonymous, self-reported survey regarding your individual health information seeking behaviors on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, perceptions of your interactions with health professionals, and questions specific to your use of digital tools for health related activities. No personally identifiable information will be collected from your responses. All answers are voluntary and for statistical purposes only for this dissertation study.
The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete on a tablet, laptop or mobile device.
