Our goal with this project was to find a way to categorize songs so that we could group them into structures where we'd want similar songs, such as a playlist that reflects a certain mood. For our categorization factors, we decided to use the genre of the song, the song's tempo (i.e. the speed of the song), and the song's key (i.e. what notes are in the song). We decided on these factors because genre is a very fundamental way of grouping similar music; tempo can reflect a song's mood, i.e. slow songs can be sadder or more serious, and faster songs can be more exciting and fun; and songs with the same key have most of the same notes, making this a good way of grouping songs that play back to back to offer a more pleasurable listening experience.
