DIY in the D
DIY in the D
a writing capstone by nickolas holcomb
this is a project inspired by the detroit fashion community i've grown with over the past four years. they taught me something that may seem obvious to some --- if you want something done, do it yourself.
moving to ann arbor from a small town, the sheer size and diversity blew me away --- then i went to detroit for the first time. wow. i first started going freshman year to clothing pop-ups across the city, and after going to a few and following the brands on instagram, they grew with me as i went through college. the events were fun and allowed me to see a side of detroit the media rarely shows, a side that i'm sure has always been there --- a side focused on hard work while making it work, a keep-it-going attitude, and most importantly, community.
this is my love letter to that. a group i've watched grow both up-close and from a far, and have inspired me to create --- whether that's in fashion, music or just to have fun. when i was a freshman i wish i had something to show me which brands to look out for. so i made it myself. this is for freshman year me while serving as an archive of an under-covered-in-the-media part of detroit culture. i hope to continue illuminating this side of detroit, and more importantly:
i hope you enjoy.
special thanks goes out to the brands working tirelessly to make it work and build community: archived 29, dos jefes garments, detroit is not dead, and 3thryl.
and special thanks to my advisor on the project bobby curie for helping with design and layout, julie babcock for leading the capstone class, and hayley and samantha for workshop help.
