Nouvelle Orleans by Lalo Schifrin is a piece that celebrates the jazz scene and festive spirit of New Orleans, written by the composer of the Mission Impossible theme. From Mardi Gras parades to smoky nightclubs to elaborate storylines about Mission-Impossible-style heists, the challenge for this group was finding a way to highlight all that they found delightful about the piece, without feeling gimmicky or chaotic.
They decided to set the scene by creating a “swampy jazz club” where they’d perform, which they entered via a second line. Memorizing music and playing it while walking is no easy feat, but the group was excited for the challenge, and it got the audience energized and clapping along. Once the piece began, a cheeky party gator could be spotted in the balconies around the musicians - the "villain" of their nod to Mission Impossible.
Watch out Tom Cruise! The Party Gator is on the prowl!
