Before we even began our work with the chamber groups this summer, this group was excited about incorporating movement into their performance of Henri Tomassi’s 5 Danses profanes et sacrees. After all, how better to highlight the five different dances reflected in each movement of the piece? This was an exciting synergy for the team, who was already thinking about how to include exploration of physical movement into our working sessions with the chamber groups!
As they began digging into each movement of their piece, clear images and scenes emerged for the musicians, which they captured in a series of evocative moodboards and thorough diagrams. Then it came time to figure out how they could actually move while holding (let alone playing!) their instruments. They workshopped lots of different ideas, both on their own, and with some of the studio members who are dancers, and ultimately figured out choreography for each movement, incorporating simple, but highly effective, gestures like bounces and trading places to create a humorous and exciting spin on the piece.
