The Innovation Studio @ NOI+F is an ongoing collaboration between the University of Maryland’s Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and NOI+F (National Orchestral Institute + Festival). At its core, the Studio aims to bring a spirit of joy and radical collaboration to our work at the Festival as we bring designers, fellows, administrators, and audiences together to imagine possible futures and learn from and with each other.
Fosters innovation mindsets and practices by creating spaces for people to come together across disciplines to experiment and learn from and with each other
Explores the hunch that for orchestras to be relevant in the future it takes a village: investment in staff, community. To make the orchestra of the future we need everyone participating.
Creates ways for participants and partners to engage in the work in different ways depending on their time, interest, expertise, and goals
The work of the Innovation Studio is ever-changing and evolving as the needs of the NOI fellows, audiences, and collaborators change and new opportunities emerge. However, no matter the form of the work, we emphasize process over product, intentionally creating low-risk opportunities to try out new skills and behaviors, while maximizing delight.
We strive to work in a way that is experimental, human-centered, collaborative, and innovative and we are always learning and developing new tools and frameworks through our collaborations with folks from other disciplines. We also draw from our experience as designers to bring a different perspective and way of working to the Festival experience. While nowhere near exhaustive, these are a few of our favorite mindsets and "design stances" that fuel our work in the Studio.
You’ll hear us talk about Chamber Music a lot - that’s mostly the kinds of groups we work with in the Innovation Studio! Chamber Music is music played by small ensembles (2-5 often) with one musician per part. We like working with Chamber groups, because there is a lot more flexibility in how their performances are presented and more of an existing norm related to musicians making those decisions (rather than a full orchestra where, generally, the conductor calls the shots).
The Academy for Innovation & Entrepreneurship cultivates the innovator and entrepreneurial mindset inside of students, researchers, and professionals through design thinking, lean startup, and team-based experiential learning in order to creatively tackle the world’s toughest problems.
The University of Maryland’s National Orchestral Institute + Festival brings together aspiring orchestral musicians from across the country for a month of dynamic music-making and professional exploration. Chosen through a rigorous, cross-country audition process, these young artists present passionate and awe-inspiring performances of adventuresome repertoire at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and in the College Park, MD community.
