Roger R. Betancourt is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Maryland. He received a B.A. in Economics from Georgetown University (Washington D.C.) and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin (Madison). He has broad interests within economics. While originally trained as an applied econometrician, his research interests currently lie in the area of applied microeconomics and economic development. His main consultancies include international organizations as well as business firms. He was an Associate Member of the Center for International Economics, 1999-2007. He was an IRIS Fellow (1992 - 1995). He was a Visiting Professor on several occasions at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, from 1984-1992. He was a Visiting Research Professor on a frequent basis at the Universidad Publica de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. He held the Kermit O. Hanson Visiting Chair at the University of Washington Graduate School of Business in 1996. He was one of the founders and first President of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy (1990 - 1992; ex-officio 1992-94). He was a member of the Census Advisory Committee on behalf of the AEA (1997-1999; 2000-2002) and was Co- Chair for the 2001-2002 period. He has been the recipient of four Fulbright Senior Specialist Awards [Chile, November of 2003; Spain, November 2005; Argentina, June 2008; Spain, September 2015] . Professor Betancourt was Affiliate Faculty at Marketing Department, R.H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, 2004-2010. Professor Betancourt became Emeritus in July 2007, but continues his research and advising activities at Maryland while engaging in short-term visits elsewhere. For instance, he was a Bozzone Visiting Scholar at the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Spring of 2008 and has spent two weeks on research activities at the Universidad Publica de Navarra every year from 2010 - present. In May 2012 Professor Betancourt gave the Keynote address to the IV Scientific Meeting of the Ramon Areces Commercial Distribution Chair at the University of Oviedo, Spain. In September of 2015 he gave the Inaugural Lecture to the Doctoral Colloquium at AEMARK Annual Meetings in Pamplona, Spain.
This web site lists the publications of Roger R. Betancourt and his coauthors in three main topic areas: The economics of production, where the main focus has been the analysis of capital utilization or shift-work; The economics of the distribution sector, where the main focus has been the analysis of retail and distribution systems; And, economic development, where the main focus has been in applications of the new institutional economics and the study of the Cuban economy. Most of the publications in these topic areas ( all in economic development) are available in electronic form and can be downloaded from this site. Published papers are copyrighted by the publishers. Users may make a single copy of published papers for educational purposes. Earlier research work in a variety of other areas (prior to 1981) is listed in the CV and the publications can be downloaded from the respective journals, which are now available through most library services. The section on teaching provides information on the names, theses titles, first and current known placement of the 58 students who have written their dissertations under Professor Betancourt's supervision. It also provides information on the two general topics for which he is willing to design and teach special courses.
