Immigrants in the U.S. are categorized by their immigration status. These statuses give them varying rights and protections that impact their health and well-being. The purpose of this study is to learn more about the health of immigrants with different immigration statuses, such as visa-holders, those who have green cards, those who have temporary protected status, etc. 

Who's eligible?

Ages 18 years or older

Born outside the U.S.

Currently living in the U.S.

Have lawful immigration status

Not a naturalized U.S. citizen

What is the purpose of this study?

Immigrants in the U.S. are categorized by their immigration status. These statuses give them varying amounts of rights and protections that impact their health and well-being. The purpose of the Beyond the Binary Study is to learn more about the health of immigrants with different immigration statuses such as visa-holders, those who have green cards, those who have temporary protected status, etc. 

Who is conducting this study?

This study is being conducted by Dr. Sameera Nayak at the ROSCHE Lab at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. 

Who is funding this study?

The Principal Investigator recieved an internal grant from the University of Maryland Baltimore County to conduct this research. 

What will I do if I participate in this study?

If you agree to participate, you will be invited to participate in a 60-90 minute virtual interview with a member of the research team. The interview will have open-ended questions about your life as an immigrant in the U.S., your experiences with the healthcare system, any discrimination you might have experienced, and your overall well-being. You will also be asked to fill out a short demographic questionnaire. 

Do I need to travel to participate in this study?

No, you do not need to travel. This study is conducted online. You will need a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access so that you can participate in the interview.

What will I get for participating in this study?

You will receive a $20 digital gift card as a token of our appreciation. 

How will my data be used?

Your de-identified data will be analyzed to better understand how immigration status impacts the health of immigrants in the U.S. Results will be shared in aggregate in scientific journals, conferences, and presentations. Your data will never be shared in a way that could identify you.

Will it cost me to participate in this study?

No, it will not cost you anything to participate.

Does this study have ethical oversight?

Yes, this study has been approved by the University of Maryland Baltimore County Institutional Review Board [IRB #1153]
