In our society and many others, children are subscribed to gender scripts from birth. Research shows some important ways in which parents transfer their gender-normative stereotypes to their children. The research also touches on the fact that parents are in the unique position to disrupt the gender socialization process and points out some strategies to do so.
This course helped me to recognize the ways in which gender is constructed and how to begin to break down gender stereotypes. Being aware of the ways in which gender stereotyping can cause harm is a big part advocating for Birth and Reproductive Justice. Gender stereotypes around women's reproductive health can stymie access to essential healthcare and contribute to inequity broadly.
