Legal and Ethical Issues

in Community Leadership
In 2018, UMBC was sued for intentionally covering up incidents of sexual assault that occurred on UMBC’s campus. I researched how UMBC responded to the allegations of supporting a "culture of rape". There were many legal and ethical violations that occurred to bring about this important change in culture to UMBC.
UMBC's response included:
A cultural movement to combat sexual violence through Retriever Courage
A sexual misconduct policy and procedure overhaul
The implementation of mandatory sexual violence and harassment prevention training
The creation of the Office of Equity and Inclusion
OEI is now responsible for managing UMBC’s efforts related to Title IX as well as other civil rights issues, including discrimination, harassment, hate and bias; and have created an online confidential reporting form. I was a pivotal part in establishing the office and website from 2019-2021.
Part of Reproductive Justice is the right to relationships that are violence free. My research paper outlines how UMBC is making strides toward an inclusive environment that is free of gender violence and discrimination.
Throughout this course, I developed skills around identifying legal and ethical violations. I also learned how to establish a non-profit organization in an ethical, mission-focused manner. This course prepared me to lead communities ethically and legally. This course also provided tools for engaging in allyship with marginalized. Allyship is the ongoing, difficult practice of unlearning and re-evaluating, in which a person of privilege works in solidarity and partnership with marginalized groups to dismantle systems that hinder equal access and basic rights.
