UMass Geography


Geography spans and integrates the social, physical, and spatial sciences. At UMass Amherst our geography community includes undergraduate and graduate students and faculty dedicated to understanding our world and addressing a wide range of challenges, such as climate change, sustainability, and development.  We offer undergraduates academic options including BA, BS, 2nd Major, Minor, and a Certificate in GIST, and graduate options including an MS, Professional MS in GIST, and PhD.

The UMass Geography Program is part of the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences, the College of Natural Sciences, and the School of Earth and Sustainability. We offer two undergraduate degrees (B.A. and B.S.), a minor in Geography, an undergraduate certificate in GIST, a one-year professional M.S. degree in Geography--Geographic Information Science and Technology, and a two/multi-year M.S. degree in Geography. Graduate students can also earn a Ph.D. in Geosciences with a concentration in Geography. All geography majors complete the UMass Geography Undergraduate Core Curriculum, which emphasizes basic courses in both human and physical geography and skills acquisition in writing, field research, statistics, mapping, and Geographic Information Science and Technology.
