Professor Pradhan is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is a co-director of the Human Performance Laboratory. Professor Pradhan received his MS & PhD in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at UMass Amherst. He was a National Institutes of Health Intramural Research Training Award Fellow at the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, MD, until 2013. He was then an Assistant Research Scientist at the Young Driver Behavior and Injury Prevention Group and then the Human Factors Group at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI).
Professor Pradhan has authored over 40 peer-reviewed journal articles, technical reports, and book chapters, and over 25 conference papers. He is a Contributing Editor of the Journal of Law and Mobility, and has served as peer reviewer for journals such as Accident Analysis and Prevention, Ergonomics, Human Factors, Social Development, Traffic Injury Prevention, and, Transportation Research Part F.
He currently serves on various Transportation Research Board (TRB) Technical Activities Standing Committees & Subcommittees including the Committee for Simulation and Vehicle and Operator Performance Measurement, the Committee for Operator Education and Regulation, the Subcommittee on Young Drivers, and the Joint Subcommittee on Human Factors in Road Vehicle Automation. He is also active as a friend of the Standing Committee on Vehicle-Highway Automation and Standing Committee on Vehicle User Characteristics.
He is also a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) (where he is a member of the Scientific Program Committee and the Special Interest Group on Automated Vehicles), the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), and was past-chair of the Surface Transportation Technical Group of the HFES.
Professor Pradhan's research has been funded by external sponsors such as the US Department of Transportation, the National Institute of Health, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the auto industry (Toyota Research Institute, Honda, Volvo, Denso, etc.), the Insurance industry (e.g., State Farm), and by USDOT University Transportation Centers, CDC Injury Centers, and the University of Michigan.
