I have been working, since the beginning of my career, on artificial intelligence (AI) applied to biology and medicine. I did my doctoral thesis in the field of computational neuroscience, under the direction of Professor J. M. Alonso, State University of New York, developing artificial intelligence algorithms for the analysis of neural circuits in the primary visual cortex (Veredas, Vico, and Alonso 2005, 2006/8). Subsequently, my research career focused on the field of computer vision applied to medical diagnosis, participating as principal investigator in projects for the automatic diagnosis of pressure ulcer wounds (Veredas, Mesa, and Morente 2015; Veredas et al. 2015; Veredas, Mesa, and Morente 2010). In the biomedical field, I have worked on the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence models to cancer prediction from gene expression data, using transfer learning strategies (López-García, Jerez, Franco, et al. 2020). This same type of AI methods and strategies allowed significant advances in the prediction of post-translational modifications of proteins and, more specifically, in the prediction of methionine oxidation (Veredas, Cantón, and Aledo 2017; Veredas et al. 2020; Aledo, Cantón, and Veredas 2017), using deep learning strategies for the transfer of learning from models dedicated to the prediction of other PTMs such as phosphorylation (Lopez-Garcia et al. 2019). Finally, in recent years I have focused my research on the application of deep learning and transfer learning models based on Transformer models in clinical text information-extraction tasks in the field of oncology (López-García et al. 2021; Lopez-Garcia et al. 2021; López-García, Jerez, Ribelles, et al. 2020). I am currently principal researcher in projects in this field and have funding in state competitive research programs.
