UM Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Mobility Program 2024
The "Just Net-Zero" program is a one-month initiative under the UM ESD Mobility Program 2024, focusing on exploring and promoting education and exposure on net-zero and sustainability initiatives. Participants will explore Sustainability@UM, the Regional Centre of Expertise on ESD, EcoCampus living labs, citizen science, and practical carbon neutrality interventions both from Universiti Malaya and its strategic sustainability partners. The program emphasizes the need to promote equitable and inclusive net-zero solutions, ensuring benefits for all communities.
This program aims for participants to:
Expose to Net-Zero Strategies: Enhance understanding of the principles and practices required to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, leveraging the experiences of Universiti Malaya.
Foster Networking for Climate Action: Encourage collaboration among international participants and local communities to explore and deep dive on net-zero initiatives, exploring future engagement opportunities focused on climate action.
Enhance Sustainability Knowledge with a Net-Zero Focus: Provide both theoretical and practical insights into achieving net-zero emissions through the lens of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Showcase Localized Net-Zero Practices: Highlight how net-zero strategies are adapted and implemented within Malaysia, emphasizing the unique approaches to achieving sustainability and carbon neutrality in the local context.

Day 1 of exciting program activities lays the groundwork for participants to delve into the principles of sustainability, comprehend the importance of the Net-Zero, and cultivate teamwork and creativity in devising sustainable solutions for real-world issues. The engaging and interactive sessions are designed to inspire and empower individuals to positively impact their environment and society.
5th June 2024
Day 2 participants will embark on a Kuala Lumpur tour, visiting iconic landmarks including Batu Caves, Central Market, the National Mosque, Thean Hou Temple, and KLCC. This tour offers a rich cultural experience and showcases the city's diverse heritage and vibrant atmosphere.
8th June 2024
Day 3 participants will embark on the one-day event (UM ENVIRONMENT DAY SYMPOSIUM 2024) dedicated to sustainability and environmental awareness, hosted at the Universiti Malaya (UM). It includes a variety of activities such as keynote speeches, public forums, sharing sessions, and interactive workshops. The "Empowering Student Leaders for SDG Action: Inter-University Conversations on Sustainability" program was designed to foster leadership skills among university students by engaging them in dialogues focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This initiative brings together students from various universities to share insights, strategies, and best practices for promoting sustainability on their campuses and in their communities.

On Day 5 of the program, participants delved into the topics of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Green Building. They learned about the sources and impacts of greenhouse gases, exploring how these emissions contribute to climate change. The session also covered the principles of green building, highlighting sustainable construction practices and energy-efficient designs that minimize environmental footprints. Through interactive discussions and practical examples, students gained a deeper understanding of how reducing emissions and adopting green building techniques can significantly contribute to a more sustainable future.

Participants start the day with an exciting kayak tour at Universiti Malaya. They explore the serene Varsity Lake and UM Green Belt, gaining insights into preserving water bodies and ecosystems. After the tour, they enjoy a engage in a citizen scientist exploration, contributing to research on waterways and environmental conservation.
12th June 2024
On Day 7 of the program, participants gathered at Rimba Ilmu, University of Malaya (UM), where they were warmly welcomed by Dr. Thari Gazi. Rimba Ilmu, meaning "Forest of Knowledge" in Malay, is a botanical garden that serves as a living museum, dedicated to the preservation and study of plant biodiversity. This day was an opportunity for the participants to delve into the rich plant life and learn about the significant research and conservation efforts undertaken by the institution.

Participants will learn sustainable waste management with UM Zero Waste Campaign. After the discussion, they tour the UM Zero Waste Campaign (UMZWC) Site and learn about trash management. Next session, participants were learn more about sustainability at Faculty of Engineering (Aquaponic & Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing)
14th June 2024
The event began with a session with the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) APPGM-Sustainable Development Goals (APPGM-SDG). This segment focused on discussions related to sustainable development initiatives and policies within Malaysia. Following this, participants engaged in sharing session titled "Insight from COP28," delivered by the UM Climate Change Committee. This lecture was presented by Associate Professor Dr. Helena Varkkey, who provided an in-depth analysis of the outcomes and discussions from the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The event concluded with a sharing session by Nurhafizah Zahiridin, a Climate Youth Representative, as part of the Seeds Tour @ COP28.

On day 10, participants engaged in a series of activities starting with a session focused on sustainable development and community engagement. Two notable NGOs, Ekonights and Haramakers, were featured. Ekonights provided insights into environmental conservation efforts, while Haramakers showcased innovative approaches to waste management and recycling, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and creative solutions to environmental challenges.

On Day 11, participants embarked on a delightful journey, starting with an exploration of 'Farm Fresh @UPM,' where they experienced the freshness of locally grown produce and learned about sustainable farming practices. The day continued with a sweet adventure at Beryl's Chocolate Factory, where they discovered the art of chocolate making and enjoyed tasting an array of delectable chocolates.
20th June 2024
On Day 12, participants delved into the heart of sustainability with an educational visit to Putrajaya. Their first stop was at the Putrajaya Corporation, where they learned about the Putrajaya Wetland and its crucial role in environmental conservation and biodiversity. This was followed by an enlightening visit to FIKS (Fasiliti Inovasi Kitar Semula), where they explored innovative recycling and upcycling techniques. The day emphasized the importance of sustainability, waste reduction, and creative ways to repurpose materials.
18th June 2024
On Day 13, participants immersed themselves in learning about sustainable initiatives in Malaysia, beginning with an informative session at PRASARANA. Here, they explored various transport initiatives aimed at enhancing public transportation efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. The day continued with an engaging session with InvestKL, an organization focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices.
25th June 2024
On Day 15, Participants start their day with a tour of Kuala Selangor Nature Park, learning about the different flora and animals.
The day continues with tour to Bukit Melawati (Museum)
After a delicious dinner, participants go on a wonderful Fireflies Tour to see fireflies light up the night. Participants will enjoy discovering nature's beauties and the necessity of environmental protection in a beautiful setting.

Day 16: Participants delved into the enriching experience of paddy farming and fishing, engaging with age-old agricultural practices and learning the delicate balance of working harmoniously with nature. The day was filled with hands-on activities, from planting rice in the lush fields to casting nets in serene waters. This immersive experience offered a profound appreciation for the dedication and skill required in these traditional livelihoods, fostering a deeper connection to the land and its heritage
