Course Synopsis

Interpersonal communication is a crucial aspect of successful language learning and many other aspects of life. In this session, the complexity of communication process will be explored. Traditional face-to-face (F2F) interactions will be compared with the forms of computer-mediated communication (CMG) enabled by recent developments in educational technology. In addition, the impact of F2F and CMG teaching methods on different types of language learners will be discussed. Guided by the models of communication process, CMC theories and research findings, this session will offer a suitable discussion model for language learners and practical ideas on how to capitalize on the various media linked to computer-mediated communication. The contents of this session will be a practical guide for language instructors and anyone who is interested to become better at communication. This session will be beneficial especially during this pandemic period whereby the usage of computer-mediated communication is fast growing into an integral part of education, work and interpersonal communication.

The Expert

Dr. Chew Shin Yi

Dr. Chew Shin Yi is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya. She graduated with a B.Ed TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) degree from the University of Auckland, New Zealand and obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Malaya, Malaysia under a fast-track programme. She has taught students from pre-school up to university level. Her interests include applied linguistics, language learning & development,computer-assisted language learning and computer-mediated communication.
