07 April 2021 | 5 - 7pm (+8 GMT)

Course Synopsis

This lecture gives the audience an insight into the role of biochemistry in some of the current global health and disease problems. The discussion of the selected diseases highlights exciting new developments and illuminates key biochemical pathways and abnormalities in metabolic pathways, while also bringing in aspects of pharmacology, cell biology, pathology and physiology which are closely aligned with biochemistry. The lecture includes coverage of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

The Expert

Dr. Amira Hajirah Abd Jamil

Dr. Amira graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) from IIUM. She then served as a pharmacist before pursuing her PhD in Cardiac Metabolism Research Group at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford. Passionate about human physiology and biochemistry, Amira currently serves as a Pharmacy Lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutical Life Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, UM. Amira’s research is largely focused on the mechanisms and consequences of obesity, type II diabetes and metabolic abnormalities in pathophysiology of diseases, particularly in the failing heart and cancer progression.
