BTS in Southeast Asia; BTS and the Future

Dates: 16-18 August, 2023

Venue: University of Malaya & The National Art Gallery (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)

The International Society for BTS Studies (ISBS) and Universiti Malaya are pleased to announce that the Fourth BTS Global Interdisciplinary conference will be held on 16-18 August 2023 at the University of Malaya and the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There are two themes for this year’s conference, “BTS in Southeast Asia” and “BTS and the Future.”

It is no exaggeration to say that BTS has been widely popular around the world. But when it comes to the discourse on the impact and reach of BTS, Southeast Asia countries have been too often overlooked by scholars and the media. In this respect, the Fourth BTS Interdisciplinary conference will shine a light on this region and explore the important developments and changes that are taking place among its fandom. By undertaking such a trial, this conference will contribute toward enlarging the scope of the interdisciplinary studies on BTS.

The future of BTS is at an interesting juncture. Since June 2022, the band has stopped its group activities due to its members having to undertake the mandatory military service for all males in Korea. Despite this absence, its legacy remains in the heart of its international fan base known as the ARMY. What is the future for BTS? Or what is the group’s influence upon the future? What about the future of its fan base, particularly the ARMY? Answering these questions on BTS and the Future will provide insightful findings that can be shared academically among aca-fans.

This conference will aim to share research that will expand the scope and the horizon of BTS studies. It will also help to further friendships and establish an academic network, both of which will create a strong sense of community that will extend into the future.

The registration fee is 500RM/person (around USD110) for presenters and 300RM/person (around USD70) for conference participants and students; the registration deadline is 31 July, 2023
