Abstract

Usually, children who come from broken home families have bad personalities. This personality can further develop when they reach adolescence and even into adulthood. This study aimed to explain the factors that cause a broken home; the impact of a broken home on children; the role of the counselor in overcoming the broken home; and how to prevent or avoid the occurrence of a broken home family. The method used a literature review; to search literature internationally and nationally using Google Scholar. The criteria for the articles were those published in 2017 – 2021. Based on several articles that have been collected, it was found that a broken home is one of the most negative impacts on children. Every married couple always hopes their marriage relationship lasts until the end of life, but divorce often occurs, leading to a broken home. The impact of the broken home resulted in children's education that was sometimes not appropriately obtained, even to the point of dropping out of school. Psychologically, children begin to form unhealthy personality development, are easily emotional, and have no responsibility. One of the efforts to overcome the problems of children due to broken home families is the importance of a counselor. This paper concluded that the parent's role is crucial in building harmony in the family. If parents can not play a role properly, divorce will likely occur, and this causes the family to fall apart.
