Abstract

Communication between leaders and employees is an essential factor in the overall performance of a company. However, the thought process involved in the production of communication in a company is rarely seen from the particular point of view of dramaturgy: the switch between frontstage and backstage personas. The sociological concept helps explain how actors in a workplace position themselves and how it affects their communication. This research was done through in-depth interviews with five company leaders and five company staff members in the Jabodetabek area of Indonesia. The results showed that the switch between frontstage and backstage communication had been a significant factor in how company leaders communicate with their subordinates. Consequently, company staff members can differentiate the different leadership styles adopted by their leaders based on how said leaders communicate. Further research should study how dramaturgical communication is adopted in companies outside the Jabodetabek area.
