Abstract
Social media are used as a tool for communication and the exchange of information. This is also found among the middle adulthood traders in Malioboro, Yogyakarta, one of Indonesia's traditional markets, currently developing a digitalization program in this area. The use of social media in Malioboro has a positive impact which is used as a tool for selling or as an economical source for traders. Meanwhile, excessive use of social media also has a negative effect that raises the phenomenon called Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), defined as the individuals' feeling of being afraid, anxious, left behind, and restless when individuals do not use social media. This study aims to describe the description of FoMO among middle-aged traders in the Malioboro area. This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological design to describe the participants' experiences of FoMO. There were three participants involved in this study using the purposive sampling technique. The results of this study indicate that these traders still have a sense of dependence on social media, experience anxiety, and fear losing information when they are not connected with social media. Among them, the factors that influence FoMO are: social media is seen as a) a tool to maintain relationships, b) a necessity, and c) a tool to expose achievements.
