Abstract:
The article deals with the peculiarities of professionalisation of future translators’ training in German higher education institutions. The key concept of the study «professionalization» in its broad and narrow sense is specified.
The authors analyse the ways of professionalisation within the educational programmes of the universities of Heidelberg and Mainz, highlighting the main ones: offering modules of specialised translation in selected fields, introducing a separate module on professionalisation into the educational programme, and long-term practice in multinational companies.
It is clarified that universities include the following areas in their translation training programmes: standardisation of educational programmes, creation of a foundation for future professional activity by forming a base of theoretical and empirical knowledge, contacts with professional associations and unions to understand professional goals and ensure their own interests, providing access to the areas of future professional activity, and familiarisation with technical and ethical standards of professional behaviour.
The article presents a list of competencies in accordance with the recommendations of the German Translators’ Association, in particular: linguistic competence, professional competence, technological competence, research competence, intercultural competence, service competence, special skills (localisation), and entrepreneurial competence.
Keywords: professionalization, professional training, competences, institutions of higher education, prospective translators.
