Abstract:
The teacher is faced with the task of teaching students to understand authentic texts without using a dictionary every time they encounter an unfamiliar word. For this, students should learn several rules for working with the text: reading a text in a foreign language does not mean translating every word. For the understanding of any text, the student’s life experience plays an important role. So, in order to understand the text (or to predict what it will be about), it is necessary to turn to the title, pictures, and in the case of a special text diagrams, tables, and the structure of the text.
It is provided that a professional-oriented approach to foreign language learning is implemented, vocabulary consolidation exercises are the most effective, as they are communicatively oriented and correspond to the students’ level of knowledge and their practical needs. Students must master the skills of writing a resume, a profile-oriented text, a popular science article, writing an essay or speaking at a scientific conference. Because of this, authentic texts remain decisive: they are not only valuable informational and cognitive material that complements the knowledge acquired by students from textbooks, but can also become a model when performing their own creative tasks.
For the successful implementation of the set goals, it is very important from the very beginning of education to create the right attitude in students to reading as a type of language activity that has its own specific communicative task, as a means of obtaining information. When choosing material for reading, it is worth taking into account such requirements for a text as the modernity of the work, accessibility, exemplarity, meaningfulness, interest, discussion, versatility, compliance with the level of students’ training, etc. The motivation of students’ reading activity and activity will depend on the completeness of these conditions.
