VISA: Before traveling, visit the Oficina Nacional de Migración website to see if you need a visa to enter Uruguay. Contact the Uruguayan Embassy before traveling if your country is not on the list of accepted countries.
Citizens from countries that do not need an entry visa may enter Uruguay on a three-month tourist visa. This type of visa is issued upon arrival at the airport and is renewable for 90 days. You can extend your stay at https://www.gub.uy/tramites/prorroga-permanencia-temporaria.
Buddy Program: The Buddy Program integrates and supports international students right from the beginning of their exchange. Upon arrival, each student is given a ‘buddy’ to help integrate with the University’s community and develop a support network. Through this program, the international student will learn about Uruguayan culture and have their 'buddy' as a useful resource to navigate life in Montevideo.
Housing: The Universidad de Montevideo does not provide on-campus housing. However, the Office of International Affairs sends out a housing list before the beginning of every semester with multiple choices of living situations such as international residences, house stays and independent rooms to rent. The UM strongly recommends that exchange students arrange permanent housing for their stay. Upon arrival, UM suggests booking a hostel for the first weeks and searching for appropriate permanent housing in-person.
