Subject: New FAQs for face-to-face instruction

Colleagues,

I hope you had a restful long weekend. Several new FAQs regarding face-to-face (F2F) instruction are answered below. Note that the previous compilation of FAQs (Questions 1-14) was emailed on Wednesday, January 13.

As always, feel free to pass on any new questions via your chair or director.

Additional FAQs on CLAS F2F instruction, January 19, 2020

15. What should I do if my F2F section has zero students enrolled after the conclusion of Drop/Add? Answer: Your unit should close F2F sections that have no enrollment after Drop/Add. Once the section is closed the instructor no longer has to teach from the assigned classroom.

16. I would like to teach a class(es) outside. Is that possible? Answer: Yes, provided that the instructor is not teaching an online section at the same time. If you decide to teach outside, please announce this on Canvas and put a prominent sign on the outside of the assigned classroom door for late arrivals with your course number, the date, the time, and directions to the outdoor location. Photograph your note on the door (with the door and room number visible in the picture, not just the note) to document that the class is meeting in an alternative location.

17. What do I do if I have approval for an ADA accommodation to shift from face-to-face teaching to online teaching once the semester has begun? Answer from the provost: The college should “remind the department chair and faculty member to inform the students in the face-to-face section that this shift has been approved by the university and to change the mode of instruction for any affected face-to-face section from "Primarily Classroom/Traditional" to "Online (100%)" so that the Schedule of Courses can reflect this change.”

18. What do I do about my F2F class if I am withheld from campus by Screen, Test and Protect and am required to quarantine? Answer: Assuming that you are not ill, inform face-to-face students that they will attend online for the duration of the quarantine, and inform your chair/director.

19. What do I do about my assigned courses if I become ill during the semester? Answer: You must take sick leave during the duration of the illness (use FMLA if the illness lasts more than two weeks), and inform your chair/director, who will ensure that a plan is in place to continue the assigned instruction. You may not teach remotely while on sick leave.

20. How do I manage my assigned classes if I engage in university-approved travel? Answer: Inform your chair/director, who will ensure that a plan is in place to continue the assigned instruction.

21. I am teaching from a classroom with no students present. May I take off my face covering? Answer: Yes, but only if the classroom will not be occupied for the class period immediately after your class. You can check the room schedule by asking the departmental course scheduler to use the UF STARS system. The STARS system provides the full course schedule for all periods in every UF classroom. Be sure to check all days you are teaching in the classroom. If departmental access is not available, you may contact Associate Dean Margaret Fields.
