Because of the relational aspect of the Global RA positions it is desired that all GRAs will commit to a full year of employment to minimize disruption to the community and provide consistency in communication. That said, those unable to commit to a full year of service may not be considered.
Global Resident Assistants are assigned to their own room however they share an apartment with one other individual that may or may not be personally chosen. If you are unable to personally identify an individual roommate at the time of which you sign your housing agreement, one will be assigned to you.
Because of the nature and options for on-campus housing, and the fact that these positions require live-in responsibilities, Family Housing is not available for individuals serving in these roles.
Global RAs are compensated with an annual stipend of $1,262 (which is subject to change each year). In addition to this stipend, staff members receive free housing in the UDayton Global community and a meal plan valued at $1790/semester for use in the University dining facilities. According to United States Internal Revenue Service guidelines, amounts received as part of the housing and board plan may be considered taxable income to the recipient. Please consult your tax advisor for the proper treatment of these funds on your personal tax return.
The overall responsibilities of the Global RA and traditional RA are very similar in that they serve as community-builders and resources for their residents. The main differences are that Global RAs are Graduate students (traditional RAs are undergraduate students) who are placed solely in East Stuart Garden Apartments where all residents will be graduate students enrolled in the UDayton Global program. The GRAs are charged with supporting their residents’ needs as international students to aid in their assimilation to campus and Dayton at-large and to attend and support programming efforts of UDayton Global.
Yes. In the event that you need a housing accommodation, required documentation and supporting medical documentation from a qualified professional must be sent to the Office of Learning Resources by January 15 for returning students and May 15 for new students. For assistance, please call (937) 229-2066 to schedule an appointment to discuss your needs with OLR Disability Staff. If your request is received after March 1, options may be limited and based upon availability.
Because visibility and availability in your area is such an important part of your position there is a limitation to how frequently you may request to be away. That being said, we recognize that it is likewise important that you take time away to re-energize and encourage all staff to utilize one weekend away per month, excluding holidays and breaks. Staff members must clear any nights away from campus with their supervisor in advance.
In terms of “contract weekends,” staff members may anticipate being asked to work/be available on the following week(end)s and may not be permitted to spend time away from campus unless they have been approved by their supervisor:
Opening Weekend/Move-in
The first weekend after classes begin
Labor Day weekend
Winter Closing
Spring Break closing and opening
Closing Weekend
NCAA Tournament Dates (if UD plays)
The position formally begins (in terms of being “hired” with Human Resources) for all staff members on August 1. All staff members are required to return back to campus two weeks prior to move-in weekend. Staff members are asked to return the Sunday before summer training begins. Staff members must negotiate with summer employment, co-ops/internships and abroad experiences in order to ensure that they return on time for training as it is a critical time for the development of skills, understanding of position responsibilities and formation and strengthening of staff relationships.
If staff members are enrolled in credit-bearing classes during the 2 weeks of summer training, they must discuss this with their supervisor prior to summer training to determine whether or not it will be possible for them to miss training as a result or if they will need to step down from the position.
As for winter training (Winter Leadership Institute), all staff are required to return to campus on Wednesday prior to the start of spring term. Training will take place Wednesday night, Thursday and Friday. Any conflicts with attending winter training must be discussed with your supervisor, in advance, in order to determine whether or not you may be excused.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, training dates are tentatively scheduled as follows:
August 11-22, 2025 - Summer Leadership Institute Training
January 7-9, 2026 - Winter Leadership Institute Training
All of the training is a mandatory expectation for the Global RA position. Individuals who have conflicts which will prevent them from attending all of training may be asked to step down from their position, or negotiate a means for resolving the conflict of time. In some unique circumstances, exceptions can be made however all requests must be directed, in advance, to our Training Absence Inquiry form to be reviewed and either approved or denied.
When you return to campus in August for summer training, the Department of Housing and Residence Life will provide you with the necessary information needed in order to request a parking pass. All staff members are responsible for the full cost of their parking pass; however, as staff members for HRL you may be eligible for a reserved parking pass located near your building/area.
Because of the nature and role of the Global RA, no additional employment is permitted. Additional employment has the potential to impact a student's visa.
