If you are interested or currently involved in the field of health care and want to meet and interact with Kristin Kalla ’87, MA, MPH, a notable public health anthropologist, please join us. Kristin will draw upon her 30-year career working in international health, humanitarian response, human rights, equity and gender justice to share insights about her career journey and the day-to-day work that she and others are doing to advance health care equity and serve historically under-served populations.

Registration is now open for the New Zealand Wellington program! Please join us for an upcoming zoom info session this Thursday 1/12 at 4:00pm. You’ll have a chance to meet the faculty director and learn more about coursework, logistics, and how to register.

 UCSD Speech and Debate

The Speech and Debate team celebrating a successful tournament!

Seven Out of Eight!

UCSD’s Speech & Debate Team Wins First Place Sweepstakes Award at National

Online Forensics Tournament #3

In what is likely the longest winning streak in intercollegiate speech and debate competition history, the UCSD Speech & Debate Team won the First Place Sweepstakes Award at Saturday’s (2/18) National Online Forensics (NOF) Quarterly Speech and Debate Tournament. This makes two first place sweepstakes awards in a row for 2023, and seven first place sweepstakes awards out of the last eight tournaments attended by the Team. (The team placed 2nd in 2023’s first tourney at Concordia University.)  UCSD won the tournament “going away”. The sweepstakes points amassed by UCSD (145) more than tripled the 2nd Place team’s total (Irvine Valley College, 47.5).

The Team set another UCSD Speech & Debate Team school record—all 20 Team Members, who made it to the Elimination Round, medaled. Everyone earned either Bronze, Silver, or Gold medals. (This also is very likely a national record.) In IPDA Debate (one vs. one), the top two speakers in the tournament were from UCSD—Annika Dengel ended on top with team captain, Michael Wagreich, next in 2nd Place. Lucas Howard-Ron was the tournament’s 5th Place speaker. Jiayi Hu, Claire Dickens, Vincent Cono, and Lucas Howard-Ron won Silver Medals. Gold Medal winners were Annika Dengel, Michael Wagreich, Julian MacKenzie, Kellen Foster, Kiran Kumar, and Fowsiyo Aden.

In NOF Parli Debate (two vs. two), UCSD “closed out” the tournament. (A close-out occurs when both teams to reach the final round are from the same school.) Cindy Chanay and Carter Castillo captured the Gold Medal, while Toby Ngo & Richey Li brought home the Silver Medal.  In the speech events, Emma Berwanger won the Gold Medal in Extemp, while Marina Hu earned the Bronze Medal in Informative. In Impromptu, Ayda Atici rose to the Silver Medal, as three teammates brought home Bronze Medals—Courtney Chan, Megan Deschenes, and Christian Kim.

Head Coach, Robert Campbell, summarized, “When the pandemic began, the Team faced a tough decision regarding continuing their embryonic program. But, to a person, their attitude was, ‘If we can only compete via cyberspace, why don’t we own cyberspace?’ Their performance at this tournament is proof they’ve achieved that goal.”
