Welcome

The Phenomenology Reading Group (unofficially abbreviated: 'phe-re-grou', pronounced 'fay-ray-groo') is a study group organized in the UC San Diego Philosophy Department for graduate-level research and discussion of philosophical contributions from the phenomenological movement, very broadly construed.  The main activities of the group are reading through, and then meeting to talk about, some of the major texts in twentieth (and sometimes 21st) century philosophy which either are one of, or have their roots in, or are in critical conversation with, the classical works in phenomenology itself.   The group meets each quarter (besides Summer) on a weekly (sometimes biweekly) basis.  Each term we typically pick a figure (or two) and try to read through as much of one (or two) of their major works as is possible.  (texts discussed in previous quarters listed here.)  Throughout the term, we each take turns opening the discussion of the week's readings.  Anyone interested in participating should contact Clinton Tolley [ctolley at ucsd.edu].

This term (Winter 2025) we will be discussing Adorno and Horkheimer's Dialectic of Enlightenment on Fridays 1245-215pm
