Cultivating Community

On Week 8 Monday February 26th from 3-4pm, the Cross-Cultural Center will be hosting Cultivating Community: A Social Justice Orientated Community Building Event!

At this event, our aim is to create connections across campus between students, staff, and faculty, who may not always have the chance to be in spaces together. We aim to connect students with our amazing staff and faculty partners so they can find a mentor, their next class, or simply make a connection. We aim to connect our staff and faculty partners to each other so that we can create connections to sustain and empower our work. Most of all, we aim to cultivate community across campus amongst those who are committed to social justice and collective liberation! We hope to center the QTBIPOC community, and all community members who share these values are welcome to attend.

OUT AND PROUD PROGRAM SUBMISSIONS OPEN

This year, UC San Diego LGBT Resource Center’s Out and Proud Series will take place April 15-26, 2024, Week 3 and 4 of Spring Quarter. We need your help to make it the best it can be!

This two-week series will consist of programming focusing on the theme “Out of the Closet into the Future” in order to bring awareness to LGBTQIA+ issues, provide an opportunity for visibility and reflections, and celebrate the many different intersecting identities that make up our community. Book Talk with Dr. Mejdulene Shomali

We are so excited to invite you all to our book launch talk with Dr. Mejdulene Shomali, who is a queer Palestinian poet and associate professor in Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. They will speak on their new book from Duke U Press, Between Banat: Queer Arab Critique and Transnational Arab Archives.

We'll discuss why COVID-19 is still something to care about, how being COVID-conscious connects to other justice movements, and what strategies work best to reduce the transmission of COVID-19.

Overview:

Bangkok is one of the most exciting cities in the world and a great place to people watch. During the course, we will practice field observations with various populations and visit several organizations at the forefront of the fight against HIV/AIDS in Thailand. We will use the location to its fullest extent to examine issues around gender, sexuality, and power in Thailand, and the role of social inequality in the spread of HIV/AIDS.  Assignments will culminate in grant proposals. Along the way, we will visit the “AIDS temple” in Lop Buri, see a fabulous “ladyboy” cabaret in Pattaya, and eat delicious Thai food at places like Condoms and Cabbages. Students will get to experience “Amazing Thailand”.

AfroRithms From the Future

The Clarke Center from Human Imagination the Indigenous Futures Institute, and the Black Studies Project at UC San Diego invite you to join us for an AfroRithms from the Future workshop on October 6, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00pm, to collaborate on imagining more inclusive and just futures, led by Lonny J. Avi Brooks, Ahmed Best, and Jade Fabello.

AfroRithms from the Future is an inclusive, design thinking, story-telling game built on the principle of shifting from a center of Western cultural views to alternative future worlds where Black and BIPOC cultural perspectives are at the forefront. An explicit goal is to “democratize the future [and to] intentionally anticipate democratic anti-racist futures where Black and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) futures matter.”

McNair Program Applications

Attention Undergraduate Juniors and Seniors! The UCSD McNair Program is now accepting applications for 2022-2023 through October 23, 2022. The McNair Program provides research opportunities that help low-income, first-generation college students prepare for doctoral study in their chosen field.  McNair Scholars participate in research activities in the winter and spring quarters and receive a research stipend, campus housing and a GRE course during the 8-week Summer Research Program.
