FAQs about being an Instructional Assistant in BIPN 145

Who can be an Instructional Assistant (IA) in BIPN 145?

BIPN 145 has graduate instructional assistants, typically Biological Sciences Masters Students or Biology/BMS/Neurosciences PhD students.

How much work will it be if I'm an IA for this course?

IAs are expected to be there for each lecture and lab section (~10 hours/week). The biggest time commitment beyond the class time itself is lab reports — there are 3 and IAs spend about 5-10 hours those weeks grading each of them.

How do I apply?

Information on how to apply is here. The application links are at the bottom. Decisions are typically made in August.

How should I prepare to be an IA for BIPN 145?

Definitely check out a sample syllabus and the guide for IAs, below. (Please note that different sections have different schedules when reviewing the syllabus). You might also consider attending a workshop with The Commons!

Are IAs expected to have some hands-on experience (if not competency) on the lab techniques?

Not necessarily, but we usually indicate a preference for IAs that have at least some relevant experience. We also have ~2 hour preparation meetings each week before lab (on Mondays) in which we conduct the experiments for that week.

How many students are in the course?

This lab course is capped at 42 students.
