Hands-on astronomy education for high-school students
AstroReach is an educational outreach program designed to inspire the next generation of astronomers. Our goal is to bridge the gap between high school and higher education, empowering students to explore the cosmos through scientific careers.
Through a series of courses run at local high schools, AstroReach introduces students to big questions in astrophysics, including active research topics, with an emphasis on hands-on coding activities. To date, our cohorts have learned about dark matter, galaxy formation, and cosmology while gaining essential Python and data visualization skills.
Google Colab exercises using Python to analyze and visualize real astronomical data.
Opportunities to create custom visualizations of cosmological simulations.
Trips to university research departments to interact with scientists and showcase student projects.
AstroReach has been offered in two locations:
AstroReach SD: The ongoing program in San Diego, in partnership with The Preuss School and the UC San Diego Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics.
AstroReach LA: The original program launched in Los Angeles, in partnership with USC Hybrid High School, Carnegie Observatories, and CreateNow.
