You’ll use Zoom to talk to your instructor or TAs during office hours or other synchronous online meetings. If you are new to Zoom, you need to download Zoom to your device before your first meeting. Zoom is available for laptops, or as an app on Android and iOS devices.
If you’re already a Zoom pro, make sure Zoom is updated! Zoom updates frequently and your software or app should be up to date for the best experience.
To Get Started: You should sign into Zoom at ucsc.zoom.us with your @ucsc.edu email.
For Zoom help, visit Zoom's help site or their catalog of Video Tutorials.
For UCSC Zoom help, email help@ucsc.edu or by phone: (831) 459-HELP (4357).
Test Zoom first. Try a test meeting to get familiar with the Zoom interface and check your camera and audio.
Having webcam issues? Try these troubleshooting tips before contacting ITS Support.
Log in with your UCSC Zoom account. Use your @ucsc.edu email. Some instructors may restrict access to UCSC-only accounts.
Treat Zoom meetings like you would an in-person class or office hour.
Join from a quiet, private space with a stable internet connection if possible.
Use a virtual background for privacy, if your device supports it.
Add a profile picture that will display when your video is off. This can be a photo of you or any image that represents you.
Use headphones or earbuds to avoid microphone feedback.
If you can’t speak, use the chat to ask questions and keep the chat open to see messages.
Use reactions (like thumbs up or raise hand) to participate without speaking.
Click “Join breakout room” when prompted.
If someone disrupts the meeting (a "Zoombomber"), notify your instructor or TA right away.
Keep your microphone muted when you're not speaking.
