In Summer 2023, I will teach a course at UC Riverside on Ethnic Politics in Comparative Perspective (POSC 163S). The teaching assistant for the course is Satoru Hiramatsu, an experienced PhD student whose doctoral research will focus on identity and politics.
If you are a UCR student, you should be able to enroll in POSC 163S using RWeb and the CRN 75476.
If you are not a UCR student, you can enroll with the assistance of a CHASS enrollment manager by filling out this form.
If you are curious to know more about the course, review the previous syllabus. A new syllabus specific to this summer's course will be posted online by July 1.
Or, download a copy of the flyer as a PDF.

Summer 2023, UC Riverside
POSC 163S: Ethnic Politics in Comparative Perspective
Dates: August 1-September 2
Meeting Times: Lectures: Tues & Thurs 9-11:50am; Discussion Sections: Thurs 1-2:50pm
No prerequisites required: Both enrollment and success in the course do not require previous coursework in political science.
Take a course with global content: In addition to learning about identity and politics in the United States, this class also examines the relationship between ethnicity and politics in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Europe.
Gain valuable professional skills: Assignments and student assessments consider students' needs to gain skills that will make them competitive on the job market. Al POSC 163S students -- regardless of previous coursework -- will improve skills in data analysis and scientific communication.
Explore key questions about identity and politics:
When is ethnicity politicized?
When does ethnic difference lead to conflict?
What promotes interethnic cooperation and post-conflict tolerance and reconciliation?
How do political institutions shape the way people identify themselves? Or how they vote?
How should we measure ethnicity and diversity?
