DLII is aware of the recent district court opinion regarding student privacy as it relates to online test proctoring. 

We encourage you to view the most recent newsletter from UCM's General Counsel office (email from UCM Office of General Counsel, subject "OGC Legal Bulletin" sent: Fri, Sep 2, 3:03pm).  We are happy to answer any questions you have related to setting up test proctoring in your course.  We strongly encourage you to add privacy statements for all technology applications you use in your course.  You can find privacy statements for the most commonly used applications at our Blackboard User Support webpage.

Changes to the Blackboard Template for Spring Course Shells

When Blackboard course shells are launched in late September, you will notice a few changes to the course shell template.  To better align with best practices standards, several course menu items have been renamed.  You can compare the previous version to the new version below:

In addition to several name changes in the course menu, you will notice a direct tool link added for 'My Grades', and a new content area 'Privacy Statements' that includes links to the privacy statements of frequently used third party applications.  

The 'Achieve' link allows faculty to directly access the Achieve platform from Blackboard. This item defaults to 'hidden from students' because this is intended for faculty use only.  Please visit the Success Advising Center Achieve Training Materials site if you have any questions about using Achieve.

Another improvement is that there are now two JCKL links that default to being visible to students; the 'JCK Library' link that directs students to the JCKL homepage, and the 'JCKL Research Support' link that directs students to the appropriate research area based on the course subject matter. 

If you copy your course from a previous semester course you will not be impacted by these changes.  Although we encourage you to keep the ‘My Grades’ and the JCKL links active for student access.

Blackboard Original view or Blackboard Ultra?

What’s the difference?

DLII will be hosting a virtual presentation:  Bb Learn Original course view vs. Ultra  course view. Join us via Zoom on Sept. 27 at 3:00pm.  In this broad overview we will give considerations regarding the adoption of Learn in Ultra Course view. All features that are currently available in Original Courses continue to be available with Ultra Base Navigation, our current navigation system, however we now have the capability of offering a new course view in Bb Learn Ultra course view.

Features are composed of many elements and are implemented with a specific user interface in both the Original and Ultra experiences. The “more info” link is provided as a convenience so that these details can be better understood.

Once again, thank you for your interest, and we look forward to partnering with you to better understand your desired workflows and use cases and to help you with a plan for adopting Ultra courses!

Original Course View

The Original Course View includes all of the traditional workflows and depth of function historically in Blackboard Learn.

The course menu appears on the left side for the organization and navigation of your course. Creation of links occurs on the course menu to present tools and content to students.

The area after the course menu is the Course Management Panel. You can access the Control Panel which includes content collection file repository, and Grade Center. Choose which course tools are available to your students. Students don't see the Control Panel.

Your content appears in the main window pane to the right of the course menu. You use the functions above the main window to add content, such as Build Content and Assessments. Throughout your course, most items and tools have menus.

Ultra Course View

In the Ultra Course View, you have simplified workflows, a modern look and feel, and a fully responsive interface on all devices.

On the Course Content page, select the plus sign wherever you want to create content. In a new, blank course, use the functions to add content, such as Create and Upload. Select the icons on the navigation bar to open frequently used tools, such as discussions.

All of your course content appears in the main part of the page. You can always see the left navigation area that peeks from behind layers.

Most content items, such as folders and assignments, have a menu with options. When you open a piece of content, it slides out in a layer on top of the Course Content page. Close layers to go back to a previous spot in your course.
