When looking at “A story” being explored in the lecture there are some things I can connect with. Although some of what is being explored in the lecture are from a different cultural perspective, there are some things that as a minority I can relate to. In my family, I am expected to succeed, I am supposed to do better than my parents have. Whether that is academically or career-wise part of my identity is to succeed and be successful at something whatever that is. For many first-generation college students, there is a huge weight put on our shoulders, and something we constantly fear is failure.
Some of my “B Story” includes majoring in public health policy. After a long journey of figuring out what major or career I would like to pursue in the future, I decided that I wanted to pursue something in healthcare. I initially thought and was very closed-minded about the possibility of changing the career I wanted to pursue. But as I began my journey in college I realized that there is so much I want to do and maybe my initial career choice wasn't the right one for me. Public health is something that I didn't hear a lot about growing up so I didn't have a lot of information surrounding it. Growing up and going to hospitals sparked an interest to be involved in something in healthcare. My main purpose or mission is to help others live healthier lives, which is a similar message that public health shares. I choose public health policy over sciences because I feel like there is s much that can change or improve on that side of healthcare. So far I love my major and the many opportunities it has and the variety of things that come with it. My background has impacted my choices and the way I see education. Although I really love my major, for my research project I think I would like to research something important to me that I don't get to see in my classes.
