Susana Mondschein is an Industrial Engineer and holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Sciences from the University of Chile and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her academic profile combines a strong national foundation with international experience and a strategic vision in analytical models and applied operations.
She is an Full Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Chile, where she is currently serving her second term as Director (2025–2027), driving the department’s institutional consolidation and academic leadership. She is also a researcher at the Institute of Complex Engineering Systems (ISCI) and at the Center for Cancer Control and Prevention (CECAN). Between 2001 and 2011, she taught at the Yale School of Management, and later, from 2012 to 2020, at the Adolfo Ibáñez University, where she also served as Director of the Industrial Engineering Program.
In addition to her academic roles, she was appointed in 2022 by the President of Chile as one of the five advisors to the National Commission for Evaluation and Productivity (CNEP). She also presided over the Chilean Institute of Operations Research (ICHIO) from 2021 to 2023. In recognition of her contributions to research, education, and public innovation, she was named one of Chile’s 100 Women Leaders in 2024.
Her area of specialization lies in applied stochastic models, with a particular focus on health management and epidemiology. In this field, she collaborates with multidisciplinary teams from the University of Chile’s School of Medicine, the Machine Learning in Health group at the MIT Abdul Latif Jameel Clinic (J-Clinic), the Instituto Nacional del Tórax, and the Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTA), among others.
Her research has been published in leading journals, including Management Science, Operations Research, Production and Operations Management, PLOS ONE, Scientific Reports, European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR), ITORS, and Annals of Operations Research.
Her career stands out for combining research excellence, strategic leadership, and a strong commitment to society.
