The Dept of Biology at Langston University and the College of Biological Sciences at the University of California, Davis, have developed a summer research internship program funded by the National Science Foundation. The program will provide hands-on training in current concepts and techniques of molecular biology, genetics and genomics, at the University of California-Davis. This internship will be a great opportunity for students to gain laboratory experience and learn about molecular biology and genomics research using plants as model systems.
The training will be a combination of lectures and hand-on laboratory work, hosted by the Sundaresan lab in the Plant Biology Department. The internship will be lead by a faculty member from Langston University and Dr Sundaresan from UC Davis, with assistance from Graduate students.
Students can expect to learn: molecular biology skills, gene editing (CRISPR) from design to application and basic tools of bioinformatics and genomics.
The internship will last 4 weeks, with a Langston faculty member participating in a supervisory role for the first week of the program. The program will cover all related expenses, including travel, room and board, as well as provide stipends of up to $4000 for each student participant. Students are expected to be full-time participants in extensive lab work and related activities, and committed to complete engagement in the program.
Langston students Destiny, Joshua and Genesis collecting samples from plants that have been edited using Crispr.
The green patches in the leaf show the presence of a virus that the students used to deliver the CRISPR components
The leaves show white spots where cells are edited so that they cannot make chlorophyll.
Langston students visited the Innovative Genomics Institute where they toured labs working on CRISPR research, and met Nobel Prize winner Dr Jennifer Doudna.
Program runs from June 28 - July 25, 2026 (exact dates to be confirmed)
Room and board will be provided at UC Davis
Travel to the internship location will be covered up to $700 airfare and $100 ground transportation
Students will be given a stipend of $3600 plus a $400 bonus for presenting their work at an undergraduate research conference
Applications are open and applicants will be considered until Friday Jan 30 2026. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-February.
Applicants must be current undergraduate students at Langston University.
