BIOL0016- DEVELOPMENTAL Biology

BIOL0016 (Developmental Biology) is a course offered to students who are required to take General Biology 1 as a core course in their associates’ degree program of study at the University of Belize. This course is to assist those students who did not perform well in their high school biology course, but want to pursue a tertiary level degree in a field that requires General Biology 1. Thus, this developmental course provides an overview of classification, chemistry of life, transport systems, reproduction, genetics and ecology.

CHEM0016 (Developmental Chemistry) is a course offered to students who are required to take General Chemistry 1 as a core course in their associates’ degree program of study at the University of Belize. This is an introductory course designed for students with no Chemistry background who need to take General Chemistry I and Introduction to Organic Chemistry & Biochemistry. It includes basic principles in Chemistry. Topics to be covered: Units of Measurement; States of Matter; Atomic Theory and Structure; Chemical Bonding; Chemical Reactions; The Periodic Table; Mole Calculations; Chemical Names and Formulas.

GSTU0014-STUDY SKILLS

The emphasis in the GSTU0014 (Study Skills) course is on learning skills that are essential for success in college work. This includes strategies for a successful transfer to the University of Belize after participating in the Open and Distance Learning developmental course. This course is designed for students to learn study skills and test taking strategies that will provide them with the necessary skills to be successful in college. Topics for the course will include but are not limited to: note taking strategies, learning styles/personality indicators, study strategies, resource usage/research skills, stress management/test anxiety, test taking strategies, and textbook usage.

ENGL0090-PRE COLLEGE ENGLISH I

ENGL0090 (Pre College English I) course focuses on an in-depth review of grammar with emphasis upon usage. Strong attention will be given to the development of composition and critical reading skills in reference to the development and organization of paragraphs for a variety of purposes. Vocabulary development and a wide range of supplementary readings will complement this course of study.

ENGL0095-PRE COLLEGE ENGLISH II

ENGL0095 (Pre College English II) course focuses on developing competency in grammar usage, reading and writing that are necessary to succeed in College English courses. It is designed to help students develop writing skills; therefore, the course emphasizes the writing process and critical awareness that are vital for academic ​and technical ​purposes.

MATH0014-DEVELOPMENTAL MATH

MATH0014 (Developmental Math) course examines the basic/fundamental concepts of real numbers and algebra. Its purpose is to provide students who are not adequately prepared to take on Intermediate Algebra (Math 1014) with the necessary mathematical concepts they had not acquired. The very basic concepts will be taught at a pace that is suitable to the students taking this course.

Who should take Pre University Education Courses?

Applicants who wish to:

- Meet the admission’s requirements of the University and the various programs offered.

- Develop their knowledge and skills sets in the respective areas.

Which Pre University Education Course(s) should I enrol in?

Students should enroll in a Pre University Education course based on:

- ATLIB or placement exam score:

o 0-34 (ATLIB) or 0-59 (Placement) in Math should register for Developmental Math.

o 0-49 (ATLIB or Placement) in English should register for Pre-College English I

o 50-59 in English should register for Pre-College English II

- Program or personal choice

Additionally, note that all students enrolled in courses for their respective programs or for admissions to the University are required to register for Study Skills.

How can I register for a Pre University Course, how much does it cost and do I have access to a payment plan?

There are two ways of registering for a Pre University Education Course:

1. If you are a University Student you can register during the registration period, seven days prior to the course start date. The cost associated to a Pre University course, for University accepted students is $150.00 BZD. Additionally, note that all University Students have access to a payment plan.

2. If you are a non-University Student you can register via http://odl.ub.edu.bz --- Academics --- Open and Distance Learning --- Pre University Education --- Registration Form or by clicking on the REGISTER button above and selecting Pre University Courses --- Register to complete the form. The cost associated to a development course, for a non- University student is $250.00 BZD at the time of registration.


Where can I make payments?

If you are a non-UB (ODL) student, without an ID -Payments can be made at the Accounts receivables office on any University Campus. If you are an accepted UB student, you can pay at accounts or at the Belize,

Atlantic or Scotia Bank through providing your Student ID number at the time of payment.

I will be taking an online Pre University Education Course, where can I go to obtain assistance in getting started?

ALL students taking an online Pre University Education course are required to complete the e-learning orientation (Level 1) for online students available on the Moodle Platform. If the course does not automatically appear on your dashboard please email Mrs. Thyra Arana at tarana@ub.edu.bz for assistance with getting started.

How can I withdraw from a developmental course that I have registered for?

To withdraw from the Pre University Education courses kindly visit http://odl.ub.edu.bz --- Academics --- Open and Distance Learning --- Pre University Education --- Withdrawal Form and complete the online form.
