Biography
Elizabeth Abel is a 17-year-old rising college freshman. Raised in Portland, Oregon, she started dancing at age 5. Having finished her third and final year with Bodyvox’s pre-professional company, Junior Artist Generators, Elizabeth will continue her dance education at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in the fall. She has trained in multiple dance genres including: tap, ballet, contemporary, modern, and hip hop.
An avid tap dancer, Elizabeth co-founded NW Tap Gathering, a monthly tap jam with live music, providing a consistent opportunity for tap dancers to work with musicians and build improv skills. She taught tap for three years and has performed with the Syncopated Ladies in LA and San Diego.
In addition to BodyVox, she has trained at NW Dance Project, Modas Dance, and Sultanov Russian Ballet Academy. Elizabeth wants to continue immersing herself in dance, pushing beyond her current capabilities as a dancer.
Dance is an escapism for me. It’s my outlet. I can turn grief and pain into a dance which is healing and therapeutic for me. Dance is like my personalized therapy. Being in control of my movements gives me strength and it also provides me with a voice. A voice to share stories through my movements.
I love to create dances based off of simple gestures. Seeing people wave, point, or high five one another can fuel my inspiration. Even watching people breathe influences the way I move and create. I often start with a simple gesture and do it over and over again until it turns into a series of movements.
Seeing communities come together inspires me to create too. I’m constantly inspired by the way my generation is changing the world to make it a safer, more equitable society for all people. Seeing groups uniting for justice influences my creations and movements.
