Problem
Students in my US History classes are struggling with work submission, on time work submission and revising work.
Hypothesis
If students get targeted and specific feedback and if drafts are mandatory and graded then rates of submission and rates of revision will increase.
Target group
US History classes
Planning & resources
Through discussions with members of my department we devised strategies to make drafts of written work mandatory, submitted in class via google forms in a test environment.
Teacher Made Materials
Baseline data
Looking at rates of submission, rates of on time submission and rates of revision
Measuring success
I was looking for a 10 percent increase rates of submission on time submission and revision.
Baseline PT 1 Data:
Overall rate of submission: 52% (not including LTAs)
On time submission: 31%
Revision: 13% of those who submitted on time revised
Overall findings & impact
For our final PT we spent 1.5 weeks in class preparing to write an in class essay. The in class essay was a draft to be completed in a google form which had to be completed during class time. The purpose of the google form was so that students would need to complete at least something for each part of the essay (intro, 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion). Each paragraph was in a deffeent box and each question was mandatory. We also stressed that we would not accept the final if this was not done. Overall after two days of in class writing (students absent on day 1 were allowed to complete draft on day 2) here were the results:
Final PT 1 Data:
Overall rate of submission (Draft): 64% (not including LTAs)
On time submission: 42%
This is clearly an improvement! Late submissions have not arrived yet.
Actionable steps
If you want to use this strategy in your classroom, I recommend …
I would recommends talking to Idris or Sarah about how to create a google form to collect drafts in a locked down test environment
