Problem
I focused on using vocabulary in discussion both verbally and written. I noticed students being very general in their verbal and written responses in years past. I started focusing really early on with these classes since I did not want it to get away from me.
Hypothesis
If students are exposed to more vocabulary/have a model for how to use it, then they will be able to use vocabulary verbally in discussion/questioning and written, as measured by looking at benchmarks and listening intentionally to student answers/jotting down what they said.
Target group
I chose to focus on my 3 ICT geometry sections. I chose this because I was noticing students not using vocabulary in discussion and on their handouts/benchmarks/performance tasks. Also students with disabilities have struggled with vocabulary usage in years past and I wanted to support them as well.
Planning & resources
I really pushed myself to deepen my questioning by meeting with Alex to think through lesson plans/goals for discussion.
I also went to see Trudy try out a student discussion protocol which got me thinking about how to do it in my classroom
Baseline data
I took low inference notes and listened/looked at what my students were saying/writing. I purposely circulated around the room and listened in on groups during turn and talk time or work time.
Measuring success
I looked at if students were answering questions using vocabulary when I asked them. I also looked at their written responses on first fives, exit slips, and benchmarks throughout the marking period.

I am happy to pull up the stuff for people - questioning is embedded in my daily lessons/handouts!
Overall findings & impact
I was pretty successful. I think students are using content specific vocabulary more in their responses verbally and written. I noticed stronger/more detailed answers on benchmarks.

But for real, work on your questioning on worksheets and verbally.
Model how to use vocabulary for your students-when they hear you say it in conversation or write it in examples, students love an example
