Problem
Students had just finished their memoirs and neon signs. This was an assignment a la Desus and Mero (who are no longer) that students did not exactly hit out of the park. I gave them models. I celebrated the best ones from last year. I told them “Don’t just write something in marker and call it a day.” But that’s what they did for the most part. It was disappointing.
Hypothesis
If students have an authentic audience for their performance task , then more of them will complete the entire task , as measured by the number of students who turn in the assignment.
Target group
E band is a spirited group of students. They have the skills but their dynamic is that of the Bad News Bears. We have one group who are all friends and all out of their seats. Another group is so introverted that they just keep to themselves and might just morph into their seats. And there’s another who is studious and each student tries their hardest to get their best grades on everything.
Baseline data
Students were asked to complete a Google form wherein they told us who they were planning to interview and when.
Measuring success
Completion of all aspects of the task.

Overall findings & impact
There’s a lot of data that I need in order to determine how effective I was in getting them to complete the task.
Actionable steps
If you want to use this strategy in your classroom, I recommend …
Spend a lot of time looking at Humans of New York and examining the purpose of the media, and do this before you finish the book.
Make a practice blog post for one of the characters in the book.
Practice on their classmates.
Ask for volunteers and pair up with another grade. Assign them their Human unless they choose otherwise.
