Problem of Practice
During the first half of the year, AP literature students analyzed Q1-Q3 free response rubrics and then applied their knowledge to on-demand writing skills (55% of the exam).
We did not get to multiple choice practice (45% of the exam) until the second half of the year, However, in order to fully prepare students for their AP exam and post-secondary education, multiple choice practice must happen throughout in the course.
Strategy
Multiple choice strategies:
Read the title, author, and identify when the excerpt was written and what the title tells the reader. Then, look at the questions BEFORE reading the passage.
Annotate the text related to questions/lines students should focus on.
Process of elimination.
MOVE ON: Circle questions students do not know the answers to and come back at the end of Section 1.
Target group
AP Literature + ELA-12 students (Regents)
Reflection
Actionable steps
If you want to use this strategy in your classroom, I recommend …
Practice early and often!
Have students grade each other’s MCs.
Model discussion/feedback expectations.
Apply to be an AP Reader/Regents grading.
